Information about Greenland
With an area of approximately 2,166,086 km², Greenland is the world’s largest island. With a width of approximately 1,050 kilometers, Greenland actually spans four geographical time zones. However, most of the island observes only one time zone—West Greenland Time (GDT) or West Greenland Standard Time.
The exceptions are the regions of Danmarkshavn (UTC±00:00) and Ittoqqortoormiit (UTC-01:00) in the east of the island, as well as the U.S. Air Force base Pituffik in western Greenland (also known as Thule or Thule Air Base), where a time difference of UTC-04:00 applies.
Greenland is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark with its own government and its own parliament—the Inatsisartut. The language of debate in the Inatsisartut is Greenlandic, although every member of parliament also has the right to speak Danish. Greenland enjoys extensive autonomy, but some government functions are handled by Denmark. Technically speaking, the residents are Danish citizens and, as such, also EU citizens, even though Greenland itself is not a member of the EU.
