What Are Time Zones? A Brief Explanation

A time zone is a geographical region where the same time and date apply. Time zones can span multiple countries and continents—and conversely, a single country or continent can naturally have multiple time zones. Time zones are therefore not necessarily tied to political or national borders. In reality, however, the boundary between two time zones often runs along the border between two countries or between two regions (e.g., two administrative districts) within a single country.

Ideally, the Earth could be pragmatically divided into 24 time zones. These should extend evenly from north to south along the lines of longitude, regardless of national borders, in order to achieve the most realistic relationship possible between the time of day and the position of the sun. However, this is not very practical. In some countries and regions, time zones would divide communities, which would complicate many aspects of daily life. Therefore, the boundaries of time zones usually run only across the oceans in a direct north-south alignment. On land, they often follow national borders.

Since the International Meridian Conference in Washington in 1884, the so-called Greenwich Meridian has been considered the prime meridian. At that time, the zero line—which is important for cartography and serves as the reference point for all lines of longitude—was established. The prime meridian defined at that time passes through the British town of Greenwich and is therefore also called the Greenwich Meridian. The time zone corresponding to this line of longitude was accordingly named Greenwich Time or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

The Earth rotates, so to speak, from west to east—or, to put it another way: the sun rises in the east. The time zones west of the prime meridian lag behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)—the time zones east of the prime meridian are ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
