Australia has a total of five different time zones. If you include the time zones of the offshore islands, there are a total of 10 different time zones in Australia. However, the difference between the various time zones is not always exactly 1 hour.

States and Territories of Australia

In addition to the six Australian states—five on the mainland and Tasmania—and the three mainland territories, there are also seven Australian external territories. Among the mainland territories is the most recent one, the Jervis Bay Territory, which was created in 1989 when it was separated from the Australian Capital Territory. The external territories comprise six islands or island groups, as well as a portion of Antarctica. The states enjoy a high degree of autonomy—the territories, on the other hand, have significantly less autonomy or are directly administered by the federal government.
