Information about Finland

Finland is located in northeastern Europe and borders Russia, Sweden, and Norway. With only about 16 inhabitants per square kilometer, Finland is one of the least densely populated countries in Europe. A total of approximately 5.5 million people live in Finland—most of them in the Helsinki metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Vantaa and Espoo.

Finland is located in a single time zone—or, to put it another way, there is only one time zone in Finland. The time zone is called Eastern European Time (EET) or Osteuropäische Zeit (OEZ), UTC +2. Finland is thus one time zone further east than Germany.

One exception—or curiosity—is the island of Märket, which belongs to both Finland and Sweden. Although the island is only about three hectares in size (approx. 300 m x 80 m), two time zones apply here: Finnish time (Eastern European Time EEZ, UTC +02:00) applies to the eastern Finnish half, and Swedish time (Central European Time CET, UTC +01:00) applies to the western Swedish half (Source).

If you want to ask the time in Finland in the local language, Finnish (Suomi), you say: “Mitä kello on?” Then you just need to understand the answer.
